Speak Bangla. Get it written in Bangla.
Ukti is a small extension for Chrome. Click into any text box on any website, press the microphone, and speak Bangla. The words appear in Bengali script in that same box, the one you were already writing in.
Free, no account needed. Works in Chrome on a computer (version 138 or newer), not on phones.
The sentence that never gets written
Many of us speak Bangla all day, think in Bangla, tell stories in Bangla. Then we sit down to write and get stuck. Typing Bangla on a keyboard means first learning Avro or Bijoy, installing software, remembering which key makes which letter. So we write "ami ashchi", or switch to English, or do not write at all.
Your grandmother can probably tell a story for an hour. She cannot type a single sentence of it into a message.
Ukti closes that gap in the simplest way there is. Speak, and it is written.
How it works
- Click into any text box: a chat, an email, a search bar, a form, or an AI prompt.
- A small microphone appears beside the box. Press it.
- Speak Bangla. What you say appears in the box in Bengali script. Press again to stop.
A little more, when you need it
- অ
- turns typed Banglish into Bangla.
ami banglay kotha bolibecomes আমি বাংলায় কথা বলি. - EN
- turns the text in the box into English, on your own computer.
- Undo
- puts back what was there before, in one press.
- Learns
- when you fix a word it got wrong. Ukti offers to remember the fix, so it gets it right next time.
See it work
What the video shows, in words
- In ChatGPT's box, the microphone is pressed and "I can't type Bangla, full stop, so I'm saying it out loud, full stop" is said in Bangla. The box fills with the Bangla sentence, punctuated.
- A leave application is dictated with the spoken commands for new line, full stop and question mark. The box gets a new line, a । and a ?.
- In Claude's box, "tumi kemon acho, onak din kotha hoy nai" is typed and অ is pressed. It becomes Bangla script; because "onak" was typed, that word comes out as অনাক rather than অনেক.
- EN turns it into English: "How are you, you have not talked about the day". The mistyped word spoils the translation too. Undo, pressed twice, brings back the Bangla and then the typed Banglish.
- Ukti hears "প্রম্পট" (prompt) as "ফ্রন্ট" (front). The word is fixed by hand, Ukti asks whether to remember it, and the answer is yes. The same sentence said again comes out as "প্রম্পট".
- Finally "What's the weather like in Dhaka today, question mark" is dictated in Bangla and written with a ? at the end.
Where your words go
Plainly:
- What you say goes to Google. Ukti uses Chrome's own speech recognition, and Chrome sends the audio to Google's servers to turn it into text. It is the same thing that happens when you press the microphone in Google Search. It only listens while the microphone button is red. If you would rather Google did not hear something, type it instead.
- Translation and Banglish to Bangla never leave your computer.
- Ukti has no server, no account and no analytics. Ukti's own code sends nothing anywhere. Your settings and your word list stay on your computer.
- Password, OTP, PIN and card fields: Ukti's microphone does not appear on them.
- This website keeps the same promise: no cookies, no tracking.
Before you install
- Chrome will show a warning. It says
Read and change all your data on all websites
. That is true, and there is a reason for it. To bring the microphone to any box on any site, Ukti has to be present on every page. That is the cost of working everywhere. What Ukti actually reads is only the box you are speaking into, or the box where you press one of its buttons. - Chrome on a computer only, version 138 or newer. It does not work on phones. - After a long stretch of talking, Google's free speech service sometimes stops responding. Stop the microphone and start it again, and it clears.
- Banglish to Bangla is not always right. Roman letters cannot tell শ from স, or থ from ঠ. When a word comes out wrong and you correct it, Ukti gets it right for you next time.
