Banglish to Bangla
Many people write Bangla in English letters: ami banglay kotha boli. Ukti turns it into Bengali script: আমি বাংলায় কথা বলি.
How
- Type in the box the way you always do, in English letters.
- Press the arrow on Ukti’s control to open the buttons, then press অ. From the keyboard, Alt+Shift+1.
- The text becomes Bangla. If you do not like the result, press Undo and the original comes back.
Only the parts in English letters change. Bangla text already in the box, digits and punctuation stay as they are.
All of it happens inside Ukti, on your computer. The text is sent nowhere and no internet is needed.
How often it is right
Plainly: not always. Roman letters cannot tell শ, ষ and স apart, nor থ and ঠ, ন and ণ, or ি and ী. When you write shomoy, nothing in the letters says whether you meant সময় or শময়.
Ukti handles this three ways:
- Pronunciation rules: converting letter by letter, including conjuncts and the rules for ং and ঙ (বাংলা, বাঙালি, সংখ্যা).
- A dictionary of the words the rules often get wrong.
- A list of about 450,000 Bangla words: checking whether the result is a real Bangla word, and if not, looking for the nearest one that is.
Measured: for words that are not in the dictionary, about two in three (67.2%) come out right the first time. Common everyday words do better than that.
When it is wrong
Fix the word in the box. You can add it to your own list so it is right for you next time. See Teaching it a word.
Typing mistakes come through too. Type onak instead of onek and you get “অনাক”. Ukti converts what was typed; it does not guess at what you meant.
