Voice commands

Chrome’s Bangla recognition gives almost no punctuation, so Ukti turns a few spoken words into marks instead of writing them. This is on from the start. To turn it off, switch off Spoken commands in the Words tab of the toolbar icon.

The commands are Bangla words, because that is what you are speaking.

At the end of a sentence

These work at the end of a sentence, and also on their own.

SayYou get
প্রশ্নবোধক, প্রশ্নবোধক চিহ্ন, প্রশ্নচিহ্ন?
বিস্ময়সূচক, বিস্ময়বোধক (with or without চিহ্ন)!
দাঁড়ি চিহ্ন, ফুলস্টপ।
কমা চিহ্ন,
নতুন লাইনa new line
নতুন অনুচ্ছেদ, নতুন প্যারাa new paragraph, with a blank line

For example, “কেমন আছো প্রশ্নবোধক” is written as “কেমন আছো?”

Only on their own

“দাঁড়ি” and “কমা” are also ordinary words (a beard; to reduce). So they become marks only when said alone, after a pause. Inside a sentence they are written as words.

Snippets: one phrase, a whole text

Text you write again and again, such as an address or a phone number, can be tied to a short phrase. From the toolbar icon, in the Words tab, press Snippets: say a phrase, get a whole text, then add one per line:

আমার ঠিকানা = House 12, Road 5, Dhanmondi, Dhaka

Then say just “আমার ঠিকানা” into the mic and the whole address goes in. Said inside a sentence, nothing happens, so it never slips into ordinary speech. Snippets stay on your computer.

How things are written

From the toolbar icon, in the Words tab:

  • Numbers: As spoken, always Bangla (১২৩), or always English (123).
  • English words in English letters (off at first): for people who write mixed. With it on, “আমি অফিসে আছি” becomes “আমি office এ আছি”.
  • Accent: Bangladesh or West Bengal. Tells Chrome which accent to listen for. Matching yours means fewer mistakes.
